Ingredients:

2 ounces rye whiskey or bourbon
1 ounce sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Ice cubes
Maraschino cherry (for garnish)
Orange peel (optional, for garnish)

Directions:
  1. Place a cocktail glass (martini or coupe) in the freezer to chill.
  2. In a mixing glass, combine the rye whiskey or bourbon, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters.
  3. Fill the mixing glass with ice cubes.
  4. Stir the mixture well, for about 30 seconds, to chill and properly dilute the cocktail.
  5. Remove the cocktail glass from the freezer. Use a strainer to pour the mixture from the mixing glass into the chilled cocktail glass.
  6. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Optionally, you can add a twist of orange peel by cutting a thin strip, expressing the oils over the drink, and dropping it in.
